The Howard Club was formed in 1969 as a type club associated with The Antique Airplane Association. The first meeting was in Ottumwa, IA during the AAA-APM Fly-in. The first newsletter was published in October 1969 by Joe Hecker. Mr. Hecker continued the newsletter through 1974 when it was handed off  to Dennis Stenberg. Dennis published the newsletter for 1975 and '76 then passed it along to Richard Martin for '77 to '79. John Hogan picked up the editor's  job in '80 and continued till '81.

Ben Howard and Roscoe Turner.

From the information that was passed to me by Bruce and Janice, there were no newsletters from '81 till Joe Hecker picked it up again in 1984. The November 1984 newsletter contains the first indication of an organizational structure to the club. It lists Chub Trainer as treasurer, Bob Welsh as Director and Joe Hecker as newsletter editor.

All the newsletters before this time were one or two pages, typed with general information about what was going on and some classifieds. There were occasional articles about things like Rob Reichards' Mr. Mulligan replica and high altitude operations in the Howard, but mostly information from the AAA fly-in and other social feedback. The first use of pictures was in '84, and even color appeared in the newsletter. Chub Trainer took over in 1985 and continued to publish our newsletter until the Dickensons took over in 1993. The last issues during Chub's reign and all the newsletters that Janice and Bruce produced will be a hard act to follow.

The newsletter will only be as good as the contributors make it. I can't write it all and I will be counting on you, the members to support me with ideas, comment, fly in reports and technical information.
